Trading the Session You Actually Have
Liquidity, news density, and your own attention are not the same at 08:30 and 15:45. A playbook that ignores the clock is a playbook for a market that does not exist.
Markets are not equally tradeable across the day. Depth changes. The mix of discretionary and systematic flow changes. Your own fatigue changes. Pretending otherwise is how students take their worst trades after they already did their best work.
SCUTA treats the session as part of the instrument. ES at 09:40 and ES at 14:10 share a symbol and not much else.
Design for the hours you can staff
A swing trader can ignore the open. A scalper cannot treat the close as a second open without a separate page. Write the hours, then write the setups that historically live there.
The last-hour leak
Many journals show a cluster of low-quality clicks near the cash close: boredom, a wish to “use” the screen, a desire to flatten with a win. If that is your leak, the playbook should close the desk earlier. That is Scale Guard thinking applied to time rather than contracts.
A practical constraint
Put the session box on the chart. If price action is outside your box, you are sightseeing.
Questions we hear next
Can I trade every session if I am available?
Availability is not a setup. If your sample and your spreads are built on the London–New York overlap, the Asia session is a different product.
What belongs in a session plan?
Open time, known releases, max trades, max loss, and the first hour’s allowed setups. Keep it shorter than a paragraph.
How do funded challenges change this?
They add a calendar of days you cannot afford to be sloppy. Session choice becomes part of staying inside the rail.
What if my life only allows the close?
Then build the playbook for the close. Do not copy a morning open method and hope the last hour behaves.

Reading Releases Without the Chase
Scheduled data moves books. Chasing the first spike is optional — and usually expensive. Learn to treat a release as a volatility event with a plan, not as a headline to outrun.
The One-Page Playbook
If the method cannot fit on a single page, it cannot be followed under stress. Write entries, invalidation, size, and stand-aside rules so a stranger could grade you.
Boredom, the Quiet Account Killer
A flat, rule-respecting morning can feel like failure. That feeling is how traders donate R to a market that did not ask for their participation.
